NEW YORK, N.Y.- In an effort to help New Yorkers understand their Kindles, Nooks, iPads and other e-readers, The New York Public Library has launched a new free service called eBook Central.

Starting December 27 2011, patrons can head to nypl.org/ebookcentral for detailed information on how to download the Library’s digital material - including eBooks, music and videos - on to any major device. The website will also explain how to find and access free educational apps, including the Library’s catalog app Bibliocommons.

In addition, from Jan. 4 until Jan. 13, trained reference librarians will provide in-person assistance with e-readers at both the Library’s flagship Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, located on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue, and The Mid-Manhattan Library, located at 455 Fifth Avenue (at 40th Street). The free service will take place during specific hours from Monday to Saturday – patrons should check the website for exact schedules.

“Every year, right after the holidays, the Library’s Ask NYPL reference line is inundated with calls from people who need help with their brand new e-readers,” said Lauren Lampasone, digital producer from the Library’s Reference and Research Services. “We also saw a spike earlier this year when our ebooks became compatible with Kindles and people needed help downloading them. There is a clear need for this information, and the Library - which always aims to improve access to free materials - is meeting that need with eBook Central.”

The New York Public Library – in conjunction with its partner Overdrive – offers more than 36,000 unique digital items, including nearly 22,000 unique eBook titles, for kids, teens and adults at ebooks.nypl.org. There are nearly 50,000 eBooks available – including books in Chinese and Spanish – when multiple copies and various formats are taken into account. All that is required to access the material is a library card. The books can be downloaded to just about any major device, including the Kindle as of September 2011.

Rare first edition of John James Audubon 's 'The Birds of America' to be sold at Christie's

NEW YORK (AP).- A rare first edition of John James Audubon's sumptuously illustrated "The Birds of America," depicting more than 400 life-size North American species in four monumental volumes, is going on the auction block for an estimated $7 million to $10 million.

Considered a masterpiece of ornithology art, the 3½ -foot-tall books feature hand-colored prints of all the species known to Audubon in early 19th century America. Audubon insisted on the book's large format — printed on the largest hand-made sheets available at the time — because of his desire to portray the birds in their actual size and natural habitat.

The set, being sold by the heirs of the 4th Duke of Portland, will be auctioned by Christie's Jan. 20. It will be accompanied by a complete first edition five-volume set of Audubon's "Ornithological Biography." They will be on view at Christie's Rockefeller Center galleries Jan. 14-19.

Experts estimate that 200 complete first edition copies were produced over an 11-year period, from 1827-1838. Today, 120 are known to exist; 107 are in institutions and 13 in private hands. They consist of 435 hand-colored, life-size prints of 497 bird species, made from engraved copper plates based on Audubon's original watercolors.

Another complete first edition of "The Birds of America" sold at Sotheby's in London in December 2010 for $11.5 million, a record for the most expensive printed book sold at auction.

Audubon sold the engraved plates in a subscription series in England, Europe, and North America.

"The overall cost to print a set at the time was estimated to be 115,000 pounds sterling, which would be over $2 million today," said Francis Wahlgren, head of Christie's books and manuscripts.

That is why Audubon "had to presell to wealthy families with subscriptions to fund the production," he added.

"It was a kind of status thing. ... That's why many of these wound up in these great English homes," Wahlgren said.

Because all the birds are portrayed life size, Audubon found creative ways to paint them.

"Many of the large birds are bending down feeding, and they're contorted to fit the page. But he does it in a graceful way, very artistic," like extending a tail feather beyond the margin, said Wahlgren.

No one at that time would have considered that kind of book of ornithology, he said. In the 18th century, "you started moving into engravings but things like scale were not as important."

Audubon brought it truer to life, "furthering it as individual works of art, dealing with backgrounds, settings — the flora and fauna that surrounded the bird. He took the aesthetic of what is a scientific book and raised it to the point of art," Wahlgren said.

"It stands among the greatest color-plate books," he added.

The volumes stand 3 ½-feet high because of Audubon’s desire to depict the birds in their actual size and natural habitat. Christie’s said the set is expected to sell for $7 million to $10 million at it's Jan. 20 auction. AP Photo/Christie's.

One of Malta's leading contemporary artists, Austin Camilleri, exhibits at Art..e Gallery in Victoria, Gozo

Returning to exhibit in Gozo after a five year absence, Camilleri is presenting a series of new works on paper, a first in Gozo for the artist.

VICTORIA.- For its final exhibition this year, Art..e Gallery is presenting a series of intimate new works by one of Malta’s leading contemporary artists: Austin Camilleri.

Returning to exhibit in Gozo after a five year absence, Camilleri is presenting a series of new works on paper, a first in Gozo for the artist.

Ideas at embryonic stage or whimsical scribbles? These new mixed media interventions are immediately recognisable as belonging to Camilleri’s output of the past two years. They were produced simultaneously to the large paintings presented last year at Malta Contemporary Art Foundation, either as thoughts to be developed or as a distilled overflow of finished works. Although the research and processes involved are akin to those of his large canvases, a striking sense of urgency and immediacy not evident in the larger equivalent works is now palpable.

The current works are often composed in layers of opposing elements where ‘pentimenti” are deliberately emphasized. Camilleri makes use of, often at once, charcoal, non-newtonian inks, dry pigments, acrylic, pencils, pens, pastels and bitumen to produce works that feed on contemporary society. Set on drawing as the vehicle for expressing acute observations, Camilleri’s commentary shifts from social criticism to sharp humor; an absurd spectacle of politics and art floating as one in a limbo of rough splashes and symmetry where abstract and figurative coexist in aesthetic harmony.

Just like the Rorschach blots they sometimes feature, the works do not present a single, specific reading. Camilleri’s primary concern is to explore and often to question the blurring of supposed oppositions.

Austin Camilleri works across different media, including video, installation, painting and sculpture. He has exhibited in both solo and group shows hosted by contemporary art institutions in Europe, South America, South Africa and the USA amongst others. Having represented Malta in international exhibitions on several instances, his work is also included in many significant private, corporate and public collections.

CAMILLERI on paper is supported by Actavis and Bank of Valletta.

Returning to exhibit in Gozo after a five year absence, Camilleri is presenting a series of new works on paper, a first in Gozo for the artist.
