Dana Schutz's exhibition of drawings and monotypes uses images and themes from opea

Dana Schutz, Brünnhilde, 2011. Watercolor monotype with colored pencil, crayon and pastel on Lanaquarelle watercolor paper. Courtesy of the artist and Friedrich Petzel Gallery, New York. Published by Two Palms, New York.

NEW YORK, NY.- Acclaimed artist Dana Schutz opened Götterdämmerung, a new exhibition presented in conjunction with the final opera in Wagner’s epic Der Ring des Nibelungen, at the Arnold & Marie Schwartz Gallery Met on January 12. Schutz is the fourth and final artist in a series of leading contemporary talents commissioned to create Ring-themed artwork for Gallery Met. Each show coincides with a new production premiere of Robert Lepage’s staging of the Ring cycle; Götterdämmerung, the final opera in the cycle, opens at the Met January 27 and runs through May 12.

Schutz, a young American artist, has earned critical praise for her work, which may be seen in many major museums in America and Europe, including the Museum of Modern Art. She is particularly well-known for paintings which transcend genre boundaries, often juxtaposing whimsy and horror in provocative ways. Her breakthrough solo show Self Eaters and the People Who Love Them, in 2004, depicted a mythical race of self-cannibalizing people. In 2011, the Neuberger Museum of Art presented a selection from the first decade of Schutz’s work. Reviewing the show in The New York Times, Karen Rosenberg wrote that “At 34, [Schutz] is having a 10-year museum survey, an honor that does not feel at all premature…the show fills two galleries (one large, one small) with equal aplomb, and underscores Ms. Schutz’s extraordinary versatility.”

Götterdämmerung features black and white ink drawings and six large-scale colorful monotypes. One, entitled Brünnhilde, depicts the iconic heroine of the Ring cycle in her heroic (and suicidal) leap into a funeral pyre in the opera’s concluding moments.

“Brünnhilde is a fascinating character, very powerful but conflicted. She takes the whole world down, as well as herself,” Schutz says of Götterdämmerung’s heroine, adding that Wagner’s cycle of operas has no shortage of appealing artistic subjects. “There’s so much in the Ring: Rhinemaidens, a dragon, incest--even the world in flames!”

Schutz is the fourth contemporary artist Gallery Met Director Dodie Kazanjian has asked to create a Ring-themed exhibition. Earlier installments presented by Gallery Met are Peter Doig’s Siegfried + Poster Project, seen in fall 2011, and last season’s Notations After the Ring (by Julie Mehretu) and Wagner (by Elizabeth Peyton.)

“I’ve been looking at Dana’s work since 2002, when she was a graduate student at Columbia,” Kazanjian said. “She constantly surprises you with startling images that shed new and often disturbing light on the human condition. Her take on Wagner was something I really wanted to see.”

Gallery Met, located in the south lobby of the opera house, is open to the public Mondays through Fridays from 6 p.m. to the end of the last intermission and Saturdays from noon to the end of the evening performance’s last intermission. Admission is free and no appointments are required. Gallery Met is closed on Sundays.

Robert Lepage’s new production of Götterdämmerung will premiere January 27 with Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leading a cast that includes Deborah Voigt as Brünnhilde, Wendy Bryn Harmer as Gutrune, Waltraud Meier as Waltraute, Jay Hunter Morris as Siegfried, Iain Paterson as Gunther, Eric Owens as Alberich, and Hans-Peter König as Hagen. The first complete cycles of Lepage’s Ring staging will begin performances in April.

Eykyn Maclean launches new London gallery with Cy Twombly: Works from the Sonnabend Collection

Cy Twombly, Untitled, 1969. Gouache and wax crayon on paper, 76.2 x 100.97 cm. Sonnabend Collection, New York© Cy Twombly Foundation.

LONDON.- Eykyn Maclean specialises in museum calibre work by key Impressionist and 20th Century European and American artists. Christopher Eykyn and Nicholas Maclean established Eykyn Maclean in 2006 combining their 29 years of experience at Christie's where they were co-heads of the Impressionist and Modern Art departments. The launch of their new London gallery space follows on from the successful inauguration of their New York space in 2010. Previous exhibitions in New York include: Inside Giacometti’s Studio – An Intimate Portrait (2010) and Matisse and the Model (2011).

Cy Twombly: Works from the Sonnabend Collection demonstrates the gallery’s continuing commitment to a programme of international scholarly loan exhibitions in addition to commercial exhibitions. “As private dealers the majority of our work is conducted discretely. However, our galleries in New York and London enable us to bring together important works, such as these, for public exhibition,” says Nicholas Maclean.

The exhibition
Marking the launch of Eykyn Maclean London, Cy Twombly: Works from the Sonnabend Collection brings together all eleven works by the artist from the collection of legendary gallerist and collector Ileana Sonnabend. The show is a rare opportunity to view works from several important stages in the artist’s life, including many which have never before been publically exhibited. The connection between Twombly and Sonnabend came through mutual friendships with Robert Rauschenberg.

"It is an honour to show work by one of the twentieth-century's most original artists as seen through the discerning eye of one of the century's most forward-thinking dealers and collectors,” says Kristy Bryce gallery Director and the show’s curator, “in effect the curator of this show is Sonnabend herself.”

Twombly (1928 –2011) drew upon ideas expressed in poetry, literature and classical mythology. Full of surface complexity and whirlwinds of tiny detail, his works convey an intense physicality and a real sense of the artist at work.

Untitled (New York City), (1956) is the earliest work in the exhibition. Vigorous gestures are built up layer upon layer, the surface revealing the strata of scrawls partially buried beneath each successive mark, resulting in a painting that is at once archaeology and abstraction.

Another five works from 1959 to 1962 continue to blur the line between painting and writing, with symbols, scribbles, and words occupying the same energised field. With references to cultural figures such as Vivaldi, mythological tales like the Triumph of Galatea, and geographical names such as Roma and Sperlonga, Twombly's work from this period is rich with narrative evocations.

A key work in the show is Untitled (1969), a gouache and wax crayon on paper. Reminiscent of a blackboard, it is part of a series of works from the late 1960’s that comprise Twombly’s signature ‘grey paintings’.

The two works in the show from the 1970s - Untitled (1975) and Napoli (1975) - signal a new direction in his work, with the use of large-scale gestures in bold, vibrant colours, that he would go on to explore throughout the rest of his working life.

A fully-illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition with essays by Annie Cohen-Solal, author of the recent biography of dealer Leo Castelli, and James Lawrence, a critic and historian of post-war and contemporary art and frequent contributor to Burlington Magazine.

"When I became responsible for teaching others ... through drawing ... I really had to understand the science and learned a great deal from the process." — Mariana Shnayderman, MIT student, 2003

The Picturing to Learn program was founded on the following core premises:
  • drawings made by science students for the purpose of teaching others reveal misconceptions
  • those drawings provide teachers with direct feedback on what students are and are not "getting," to help promote more effective teaching
  • the process of creating a drawing to teach others has the potential to deepen students' understanding of scientific concepts
Picturing to Learn was funded by the National Science Foundation, DUE from 2007-2010. The project involved science students and faculty from Harvard, MIT, Duke University and Roxbury Community College, along with design students and faculty from the School of Visual Arts, New York. Students were asked to "Create a freehand drawing to explain to a high school senior…" various scientific phenomena.
particle in a boxbrownian motionchemical bonding
The idea began with Principal Investigator Felice Frankel's experiences while working with scientists to visually express their research. It was clear that when the researcher created drawings to explain to her the phenomena, the process itself seemed to clarify the science in the mind of the researcher. Frankel approached a team of educators and cognitive scientists with the idea of using this in the classroom and all agreed this would be an innovative approach for teaching and learning.

The primary finding of the program was that the process was a powerful means of revealing student misconceptions. A database of 3,000 analyzed drawings from various undergraduate science courses is available here:
explore the PtL database
"I was able to teach the material far better after seeing the students' drawings…They revealed misconceptions in a way that text does not… it became obvious when they didn't have a clue. As a whole, the class did far better on exams in 2005 than they did in 2004. We attribute that, in part, to Picturing to Learn." — Donald R. Sadoway, John F. Elliott Professor of Materials Science, MIT
Plans are under way to bring the program into middle and high schools.
