ATLANTA, GA.- The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia announces the opening of the third installment in the 2010/2011 series of the Working Artist Project exhibitions – Katherine Mitchell: Places of Memory and Dreams. There will be an Artist Talk by Mitchell on Thursday, January 26 at 7 p.m. with a reception beforehand at 6:30 p.m. Katherine Mitchell: Places of Memory and Dreams runs Dec. 17 – March 31, 2012. “PLACES OF MEMORY AND DREAMS” EXHIBITION The artist, Katherine Mitchell, states, “In this exhibition I explore the way in which houses where we have lived early in our lives affect our dreams, and thus our later creativity and art.” MOCA GA Director, Annette Cone-Skelton states, “This completes the exhibitions for the 2010/2011 Working Artist Project winners. We’ve experienced three very different Atlanta artists in this series, illustrating the impact of a grant program such as WAP on our artistic community. During their one year tenure, each artist created incredible works of art and produced exciting solo exhibitions.” KATHERINE MITCHELL Katherine Mitchell is an Atlanta-based artist who received a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art and a MFA from Georgia State University. Mitchell has exhibited extensively in Atlanta, nationally and internationally. She has had more than 20 solo exhibitions. In 2005, Mitchell had a major solo exhibition at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center and in 2006 she had her first museum solo exhibition at Factory/Kunsthalle/Krems in Austria. In 2007 Atlanta City Gallery East held a retrospective exhibition that spanned 32 years of Mitchell’s career. Her work has been collected by numerous museums, including the High Museum, MOCA GA, Carlos Museum, the Speed Museum in Louisville, KY, and the Arkansas Art Center. Mitchell has exhibited widely, including the National Museum for Women in the Arts in WashingtonD.C., and the American Academy & Institute of Arts & Letters in New York. She is a retired Senior Lecturer in Drawing & Painting at Emory University, where she taught for more than 20 years. Mitchell was featured as one of twenty-seven artists in the recent Georgia Council for the Arts publication: “Georgia Masterpieces: Selected Works from Georgia Museums” and the MOCA GA exhibition it inspired, “Twenty Georgia Masters.”
