Japanese Spirit: The Woodblock prints of Takumi Itow
September 15 – October 26DESCRIPTION
Chicago – Floating World Gallery (FWG) presents “Japanese Spirit: The Woodblock prints of Takumi Itow” at the gallery’s Lincoln Park location, 1925 N. Halsted Street, on Saturday September 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibition features over 30 woodblock prints. The artist will be present.
Rainfall on mountains and pines, dances lit by the flickering of torch flame and the persistent boom of drums are all powerfully captured in the woodblock prints of Takumi Itow (b.1946). Taking inspiration directly from Japan’s rich folkloric tradition, Itow’s woodblock prints celebrate the diverse festivals of his own Miyagi Prefecture. Be it centuries-old dances or the procession of lively festival-goers, Itow’s prints capture the essence of the Japanese spirit.
Steeped in the tradition of Japan’s creative print movement (Sosaku Hanga), Itow was taught the art of woodblock prints by Toru Mabuchi – an important member of this artistic movement. As with the work of his teacher, Itow’s woodblock prints are entirely self-made. He creates the designs, carves his own blocks and does his own printing.
Takumi Itow is president of the Japan Print Society. His work has been featured on Japan Post postage stamps as well as featured in exhibitions at the Library of Congress and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Itow currently teaches woodblock printing at Waseda University in Tokyo.
