Portas Abertas (Open Doors) is an international participatory artistic project organised by Fórum Eugénio de Almeida on the occasion of its opening in the former Palácio da Inquisição, marking the start of the cultural and artistic activities to be presented in this new space in Évora, Portugal.
The historical connotation of the building—the former Palace of the Inquisition—demands a responsible reflection on its memory. Creators from around the world are invited to submit works for the inaugural exhibition at Fórum Eugénio de Almeida, which will be held from 11 July to 15 September 2013. Based on a reflection on the origins of the Fórum building, Portas Abertas seeks to open debate on questions of intolerance in the past and in the present. The works received for this project should address the following topics: equality - inequality - tolerance - intolerance - inquisition - power - peace - violence - injustice - justice - conflict - reconciliation - exclusion – plurality.
Targets: creators, of any nationality, without age restriction.
Dates of Portas Abertas exhibition: 11 July–15 September 2013

About the Fórum Eugénio de AlmeidaThe Fórum Eugénio de Almeida, under the auspices of the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, has as its mission to promote art and culture, with a special focus on contemporary expressions, and to become a dynamic local centre of national importance and international appeal. It has an exhibition area of 1,200 square meters.
Housed in the Palácio da Inquisição—the first Inquisition building in Portugal, dating from 1536—the Fórum seeks to recover for the community a historical architectural heritage situated in the centre of Évora (a city classified as World Heritage by UNESCO), transforming it into a space dedicated to contemporary artistic manifestations.
About Portas Abertas (Open Doors)
With the Portas Abertas project, the Fórum intends to reflect on historical facts related to intolerance and repression under the Inquisition that, as is common knowledge, transcend the local and temporal context. The theme of discrimination seeks to emphasise that art, through collaborative international action, can open doors for intercultural dialogue, as a foundation for the construction of a fairer, more plural, tolerant and inclusive society. With this project, the Fórum marks its position and demonstrates its clear commitment to contemporary creation, crossing boundaries and overcoming the elitism frequently associated with the traditional notion of the "museum"; to networked culture and the dynamics of cooperation on a worldwide scale, and therefore to internationalisation.
Entries are made exclusively by internet through the Fórum website at www.forumea.pt, using the online entry form provided for this purpose.
